Firm History: Rooted in Tradition

Samuel Bass Hatcher
1850–1937
Hatcher, Stubbs, Land, Hollis & Rothschild, LLP traces its roots back  over 135 years to 1872, when Samuel Bass Hatcher, the Firm’s founder, opened his law practice in Columbus. Mr. Hatcher and the attorneys who joined him in practice passed down a rich legacy of professional excellence and community service which has become Hatcher Stubbs’ trademark.  The “dean of the Columbus bar,” Samuel Bass Hatcher, served in the Georgia Senate and as Columbus’ City Attorney.  Early partners John Peabody and Albert A. Carson each served as Solicitor General of the Chattahoochee Circuit.  William H. Brannon served as Mayor of Columbus and as a City Councilman.  John H. Martin authored Columbus’ first history and served as a Superior Court Judge before joining the firm.

From its earliest years, the Firm represented a number of Columbus’ leading businesses and public institutions, including the Merchants’ and Mechanics’ Bank, of which members served as president and vice-president.  The Columbus public school Board was founded by Peabody, a long-serving president of the Board.  The Firm also represented the Eagle and Phenix Manufacturing Company, the Central of Georgia Railway, Columbus Fertilizer Co., Muscogee Ice Co., and the Columbus Iron Works.

J. Madden Hatcher joined his father and brother in the firm in 1921.  He was a highly respected member of the Columbus Bar and represented Tom’s Foods, Inc., Royal Crown Cola, First National Bank and other leading businesses in the community.

The modern era of Hatcher Stubbs began in 1951, when Alan F. Rothschild joined the Hatchers, A. Edward Smith, Albert W. Stubbs in the firm.  In 1962, Aaron J. Land, a former Judge of Muscogee County State Court, became a partner.  Howell Hollis became a member of the Firm in 1969, and the name of the firm then changed to its current style, Hatcher, Stubbs, Land, Hollis & Rothschild.

The founding members of the modern Firm continued the legacy of its early members.  Howell Hollis was a State Legislator, President of the State Bar of Georgia, long-time Chairman of the Board of Fourth National Bank, and active in community affairs.  Alan F. Rothschild was a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and chaired the Georgia Board of Bar Examiners.  His contributions to his community were numerous, including service on the Boards of St. Francis Hospital and The Columbus Museum for over 40 years.  His simultaneous service as Chairman of the Board of St. Francis Hospital and the Medical Center is a testimony to his integrity and respect in the community.

Like our founders, the present members of Hatcher Stubbs are committed to providing superior legal services and making a difference in Columbus and the Chattahoochee Valley.  This commitment to professional excellence and community service is as much a part of the firm culture today as it has been for the past 135 years.
